Quick history
Seated massage on an ergonomic chair, also known as "Amma seated massage", originates from a traditional Japanese art dating back some 5,000 years.
The sequence practised today has evolved, having been codified by David Palmer in the 1980s in the USA to become the most popular corporate massage.
Stress study
A recent scientific study by the University of Burgundy has highlighted the positive effects of seated Amma massage.
Our friends David Palmer and Xavier Court encouraged the scientists to carry out this study, and our colleague Jacob Hauser performed the seated amma massages studied during the study.
FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions : Sitting Massage in the workplace by AlterMassage
Q1: What is seated massage in the workplace?
Corporate seated massage is a very popular and easy-to-implement wellness activity, appreciated by all teams, which is performed on a chair or ergonomic cushion. Its main aim is to improve employees' mental and physical well-being and boost productivity. This type of service contributes to the fitness and body maintenance of employees, while reinforcing the employer brand.
Q2: What is the Amma seated massage protocol?
Amma assis massage is an authentic massage protocol provided by AlterMassage masseurs. This protocol was developed by David Palmer and has been a point of specialization for AlterMassage since 2014. The technique is performed on an ergonomic chair and specifically targets areas of accumulated tension in the back, neck, shoulders and arms, which are frequently strained by office work postures.
Q3: What are the benefits for employees?
The benefits of seated massage for employees are many and varied. The technique significantly reduces stress and anxiety in just 15 to 20 minutes. It stimulates the release of oxytocin, the well-being hormone, which promotes relaxation and reduces nervous tension.
Massage provides immediate relief from physical tension and helps prevent Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSD). It acts directly on muscle stiffness, regulates heart rate and improves blood circulation. Studies have shown a 23% reduction in neck pain, up to 40% reduction in chronic pain, 37% reduction in headaches and 35% improvement in sleep quality in employees receiving regular massages.
Finally, it contributes to improved concentration and productivity. Far from causing drowsiness, the relaxation it procures allows the mind to "clear the air", facilitating a return to work with greater alertness. Measurements have shown a 26% increase in alertness immediately after a session, which can translate into fewer mistakes.
Q4: How does massage in the workplace benefit organizational performance?
Corporate massage is an investment that has a direct positive impact on an organization's overall performance. By acting on the physical and mental well-being of teams, it contributes to improved collective performance. The implementation of regular massage programs is associated with a reduction in absenteeism, with documented cases of 2.5 fewer days of sick leave per year per employee.
Sitting massage is a wellness activity that also strengthens the employer brand. It is increasingly seen as a strategic tool for complying with employers' legal obligations in terms of health in the workplace. It is a proactive and effective means of preventing Psycho-Social Risks (PSR) and Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSD), in accordance with article L4121-1 of the French Labour Code.
Q5: What are the logistical aspects of a service?
An AlterMassage service is designed to be simple to set up. Massages take place on an ergonomic chair or cushion and are accompanied by music. A one-off service, for a single masseur, can last up to 5 hours, providing 15 20-minute massages or 10 30-minute massages. Regular services, of a similar duration per intervention, can extend over several months and include a larger number of massages.
Q6: How can employees book a session?
To facilitate reservation management, AlterMassage offers, as an additional service, a time slot reservation system, available at a cost of €100 (excl. VAT) per service. This software greatly simplifies coordination and enables large companies to ensure smooth implementation.
Q7: What are the rates for companies?
AlterMassage offers several pricing options tailored to the needs of companies. The one-off service is invoiced at €450 excluding VAT, including up to 5 hours of massage. For companies wishing to set up a long-term program, regular services are priced at €4,500 excluding VAT for 11 months, with one masseur per month. The latter model offers one free service for every ten purchased.
Q8: Can massage fees be deducted from our social security contributions?
Yes, it is possible to deduct part of the cost of these services. As anAdapted Company, AlterMassage enables its customers to deduct their purchases from their annual contribution to the Obligation d'Emploi des Travailleurs Handicapés (OETH). As the majority of our services are provided by employees benefiting from the OETH, around 25% of the amount of the order, excluding tax, can be deducted from the employer's contribution.
